Guidelines for selecting the proper set size for your Fireplace

A. Front Width = Minimum 6″ greater than log set size
8 to 10 inches with safety control
B.  Rear Width = Not less than nominal log set size (add 6″ for safety control)
C.  Depth = Please see below
D.  Height = Minimum 16″ (18.5″ for Valve Vanisher)

See notes below for specific exceptions.

Sizing a gas log set is fairly straight forward and most fireplaces can be sized using the above general guidelines. Certain fireplace shapes (for example, the steep taper and shallow depth of the Rumford Fireplace) may require additional consideration.

In general, for vented sets with a safety pilot control, you should select the next smallest size. For example, if the rear width is 24″ and you wish to use a safety control, rather than a 24″ set you should select a 20″ or 21″ set.

Rasmussen Vented Gas Logs are for use in fireplaces in which it is safe to burn wood. The flue size (chimney opening) must be sufficient to exhaust all of the products of combustion (soot, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and water vapor are the primary products) up the chimney. If not, or if other conditions exist that prevent full venting, these combustion products will enter the room, which can be harmful to health and property. A vented gas log set is not a cure for a “smoking chimney”.

Chillbuster Vent-free gas log heaters are for use in fireplaces in which it is safe to burn wood (damper may be closed or partially opened) or in approved ventless enclosures (made by many of the leading factory-built fireplace manufacturers). They are certified to the most strict of all gas appliance standards, which dictates their design must not produce soot and very low levels of carbon monoxide. Fresh air is needed for proper combustion and enjoyment.

Rasmussen nominal log set sizes are based on the approximate length of the front log (or combined length of two-piece front logs) of the set. These measurements should be taken from the fireplace floor, inside the hearth or lip of the fireplace, and behind any wire screens or railing that may be permanently attached to the fireplace. In deeper fireplaces, front width measurements can be taken 6″ to 8″ from the front, allowing better centering below the flue of the fireplace.

Another consideration is the location of the gas supply line. In most fireplaces the gas supply enters from the side wall. Entering from the floor can be problematic if in the center of the fireplace. If this is so, the CS on legs (2.25″ clearance underneath the pan) and LC (due to the open space underneath the rear burner) burners may be the only viable burner options.

Please contact us if you have sizing questions. Some fireplaces, due to their size (either small or large) may require a custom gas log solution. Rasmussen specializes in creating gas log sets for such fireplaces. Please provide the following additional information so that we may provide an informed quotation:

  • Front width of the firebox
  • Rear width of the firebox
  • Depth of the firebox (front to back)
  • Height of the opening
  • Flue size or chimney area opening
  • Gas type: Natural or Propane
  • Size of Gas Line and inlet pressure
  • Location of gas supply into the firebox (wall or floor. If floor, where in the firebox).
  • Do you desire: Match lit (vented natural gas only); Manual safety control (natural gas or propane); switch (natural gas or propane); wireless remote (natural gas or propane); or electronic pilotless ignition (special installation requirements apply – new construction or remodel only)?
  • Your city/state.
  • Log and burner style(s) desired
